Blue Acara

Scientific name: Aequidens pulcher (or pulchrus)

Maximum size: 15 - 20cm / 6 - 8 inches
 

Temperament: The Blue Acara is generally quite peaceful towards non-aggressive fish of similar size but they can be quite territorial, particularly when breeding.

Suggested for: Community and cichlid tanks with medium to large sized community fish. Blue Acara should not be mixed with particularly aggressive fish, very tiny fish, or fancy-finned species.

Water conditions: Neutral to slightly alkaline pH of around 6.5 to 8.0 and soft to quite hard water below 25dGH. Blue Acara are a hardy fish which will do well in a range of water conditions. Like most cichlids, they produce quite a bit of waste so good filtration should be provided and a 25% water change should be done weekly.

Minimum Tank Size: 40 gallons (160 litres)

Temperature: 22 to 26°C (around 70 to 79°F)

Origin: South America.

Average Lifespan: Around 8 years

Tank region: Mostly middle to bottom.
