Julian's right. There has been more written on the internet about this fish than any other single catfish species (click the Search button at the end of this page), so I'll try not to repeat it all, but tell you how I bred this species, and got rich quick (not). Here's my recipe. It's not the only way to do it, but it worked for me.

In April 1999, I "invested" in a pair of H.zebra. In June, the male died for reasons unknown. In September, I bought a further two juveniles. These fish were moved from tank to tank and subjected to "flood programs" at various times in an attempt to get them to spawn. Nada.

In December 2001 it occurred to me that I might not have a male, and that three females were unlikely to spawn! This is not as dumb as it sounds since immature specimens (all that tends to be available these days) are hard to sex. Fortunately for my wallet, I was able to trade in one of my females for an obvious male at my LFS. At last I had a trio of one male and two females - the basis of a nice breeding group.

In October 2002 I moved them from a 100 litre tank to a 200 litre tank with a bunch of juvenile Ancistrus which were growing on, and cranked the temperature up to 29oC (84oF). At the end of November, I broke my leg, which made fishroom maintenance difficult. In December, I s ...
