THURSDAY EVENING, SEPTEMBER 26….NEXT MEETING Science House,1645 Linden Drive on the UW Campus. (good parking)

PLANT GROWING EXPERIMENT Hands on activity of the evening.

6:30 – 7:00 Looking around, chatting and sampling pizza, sandwiches, fruit, cookies, cranberry juice, soda, coffee, tea or some such array.

7:00 – 7:10 Welcome! Has been a while… though it seems this summer has gone by faster than last year’s.

7:10 – 7:20 Project overview: We’re trying our hand with a “two level three factor experiment”, (thanks Mark), using eight 5 1/2 gallon tanks, each with equivalent plant collections. Row (A) of four tanks has a twin tube 48” light fixture with cool white fluorescent bulbs. Row (B) of four tanks has the same type rigging using wide spectrum Plant and Aquarium bulbs.

Row (A) Tanks with cool/white bulbs 1. Hard water with fine gravel. 2. Hard water with fine gravel on top of a soil / gravel base. 3. Soft water with fine gravel. 4. Soft water with fine gravel on top of soil / gravel base. Row (B) Tanks with wide spectrum Plant & Aquarium bulbs. 5. Hard water with fine gravel. 6. Hard water with fine gravel on top of a soil / gravel base. 7. Soft water with fine gravel. 8. Soft water with fine gravel on top of soil / gravel base.

Task for the evening is to plant these aquariums. All plant materials will be pruned and “damp weighed” prior to the meeting to assure near equivalent plant communities. Each work space will have an empty tank, pre-measured substrate package and a tub of floating plants, ready to go. Candidates for the plant collection include: Anubias Nana, Crypt wendtii, Dwarf Hairgrass, Java fern, Sagitattaria subulata, Java moss, Ricca fluitans, Wolffia, Rotala, Limnophila, Ludwigia and Wisteria.

7:20 – 9:00+ “ Aquascaping Maestros”…create masterpieces!

Note: October 24 meeting we will see how things look. So too on November 21. During the intervening time, I’ll be doing water changes, fertilization and testing water chemistry…..observations dutifully recorded in the log book……….John
