NEXT MEETING: Thursday Evening, September 25, 6:30 – 9:00,  Science House, 1645 Linden Drive on the UW Campus

Between now and then, let’s invite folks over to look at our aquariums. Some evening, say 7 - 9?  Pick a date. Send an invitation. Use the club email list. Mind if I bring digital camera and testing kits? Gathering around an aquarium is fun.

I have three situations to share. Chances are good through July and August, I can arrange 7 – 9 pm blocks for Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.

1. UW campus: 150 gallon Birge Hall atrium aquaria. Why not take a two block stroll to Noland Hall and the 75 gallon aqua design in room 215? A double header!

2. Madison’s West High School: The 180 gallon “built in the wall” aquarium has reached prime condition with lots of stories to reveal.  180? Talk about “big”!

3. Madison’s Edgewood College, Sonderegger Science Center atrium: A 125 gallon, open top aquaria featuring ceiling hung metal halide lighting is an arresting sight. Especially so, when Hydrotriche hottonifflora plants break water surface and display distinctive yellow and white flowers. They love the light, but do they go through the nutrients!  Yup, you figured it. Ready for a Q&A jam session?

Wisconsin Water Plants: Fetching plants from Wisconsin waters is one of our challenges for the summer. From the Mukwonago stream, Greg Stahl brought in some Potamogeton amphlifolius, a lovely plant with generous undulating ruby colored leaves. If we can sustain this species year round in an aquaria, it will be a nice offering for classroom aquariums featuring Wisconsin plants.

Seth McGee, UW Biocore lab supervisor and I located a number of “water weeds” in the Picnic Point bay shallows. They include Potamoogeton Crispus, Potamogeton pectinatus, Edlodea canondensis, Vallisneria American, Asian Milfoil Myrophylum and Ceratophllum demersum (hornwort). In the Biocore 55 gallon aquarium, Seth is establishing a collection of plants from area lakes.

Mark Adams is a long time member of our club. He's thoughtful, articulate and loves experimenting with aquaria. The above jungle is a recent foray. Alas, it is no more. Yes, he has started a completely new tack. True toform, it's delightful.
