During a hiatus between November and January meetings, how about an Update?

Attending November meeting: Mark Adams, Auston Braganza, Tim Brown, Naomi Delventhal, John Glaeser, Aaron Glass, Gordon Hartmann, Linda Horvath, Jeff Michels .... first time from Milwaukee, David Reese, Greg Stahl, Val Walasek, Dave Watson and Jerry Weiland.

Aaron Glass and I shared impressions of 2003 AGA Convention.
Keynote speaker Christel Kasselmann... illustrated account of some of her world wide aquatic habitat studies. Karen Randall... good old fashioned common sense views for successful planted aquaria. Geologist and excellent aquarium plant enthusiast Roger Miller.... selecting rocks appropriate for aquarium decoration. George and Carla Booth, long time advocates of the Dupla technical approach to the hobby .... their experiences with planted aquariums. Australian Shaun Winterton introduced a development of his, an interactive aquatic plant identification guide. Take a look at what he has created: ipm.ifas.ufl.edu/ipm2/events/lucid_demo.ppt >

For those of us enjoying nifty tech stuff, how about becoming familiar with this elegant plant ID guide. USDA & US Customs will be using this to help determine if certain difficult to identify plants are invasive species. Learn how it works and then demonstrate it to us at some future meeting. Please, could someone do this. OK ? Tech folk, you'll love detective strategies of this system.

I'm getting DVD and VHS recordings of all convention presentations including very nice Focus Group sessions. We'll be able to view these throughout the coming year.

We reviewed a number potential opportunities for membership participation. Check the list in QUEST 11/4/03: . Share your thoughts. Mark Adams, Linda Horvath and I did some brainstorming along these lines recently. At our January 29 meeting, we'll visit our potentials again, briefly.

Membership News: UW Student Naomi Delventhal joined us this Fall. She's aiming to become an ichthyologist and already has published work on Goby fish. Enjoy this: http://gobiidae.com/breeding_awaous.htm >. Though having a heavy academic load, Naomi maintains a sixteen tank fish room.

Please wish Naomi well, as she recovers from a serious accident. While crossing University Avenue on the way to class, she was hit by a car. A concussion and badly bruised legs with two bone breaks in one leg is a serious and painful reality. Naomi was discharged December 2, after a week in UW Hospital and is home now, in Richland Center, recovering.

Naomi, our thoughts are with you. Our wishes extend, for a timely and complete recovery.
