Keeping Bettas or Siamese Fighting Fish

Some of you have been asking us through email and I have received the question for quite a number of time on where you can purchase affordable yet quality Bettas. Well, aside from the obvious answer which is Thailand (you can buy them there for an extremely cheap price), you can try sites like this one. One of our writers purchased his Betta in that site. I would also recommend Aquabid but you should purchase from a recommended seller.

Among the most famous tropical fish are bettas also known as Siamese fighting fish. The dramatically coloured males of the species are often sold singly, but, properly managed; they can make an attractive addition to your community fish tank.

Bettas are famous because of the aggression of the males, who will fight and kill rivals. This has led to them being kept as fighters for human entertainment. Male bettas can also be aggressive towards fish of other species with red or blue colouration, but otherwise they (and the modest brown-coloured females) are actually quite peaceful, agreeable tropical fish capable of enjoying company. However, because they have long fins, you should be wary of housing them with fish like angel fish and rasboras who are likely to nip them.
